Approved Supervisors

Suppose you have completed a graduate program leading to licensure. You need to complete your post-graduate hours and you know that the Code of Massachusetts Regulations (262 CMR 3.00) requires supervision of the professional practice of Marriage and Family Therapy in order to become an independent practitioner. You are working at an agency to acquire post-graduate hours, and you are assigned a supervisor who could provide the required supervisory hours – only they are not LMFTs or they have limited experience supervising a student interested in refining their skills in working with couples and families. Your goal is to increase your confidence working with the children, families, and couples you see every day at your agency. What are your choices?

AAMFT has an Approved Supervisor designation, where LMFT professionals with advanced educational, experiential, and supervisory experience are awarded the title of Approved Supervisor. The designation requires each Approved Supervisor candidate to undergo a training program in how to be a supervisor for marriage and family therapists. The training requirements include completing a 30-hour course in the fundamentals of family therapy supervision, providing 180 hours of clinical supervision to MFT trainees, and receiving at least 36 hours of mentoring from a current AAMFT Approved Supervisor. Participation in the training includes observation of supervision sessions and completion of a Theory of Supervision statement.

So what might be offered to you by an AAMFT Approved Supervisor? Supervision provided by an Approved Supervisor focuses on understanding relationship problems from a systemic perspective. The AAMFT Approved Supervisor is prepared to develop the supervisee’s ability to assess and competently intervene in complex relational cases. Approved Supervisors are trained to facilitate a supervisee’s clinical development and to add reflections and insight consistent with systemic thinking. Approved Supervisors have considerable professional experience in the field and can consider case dilemmas through ethical and practical standards with self-of-therapist focus.

To support pre-licensed and licensed marriage and family therapists, this list of AAMFT Approved Supervisors residing in Massachusetts is provided. Further information about their practice is available through the AAMFT Therapist Locator and/or the AAMFT Approved Supervisor Directory.
